On the 13th of April, 2024, we took a trip to Stirling to conduct an incredibly spooky ghost hunt inside Stirling Old Town Jail.
Dating back to 1847, this imposing prison was actually quite advanced for its time. Prior to its construction, prisoners had been kept in squalid conditions in the city’s tollbooth. The new jail, by comparison, was extremely clean and secure, with a focus on reform rather than simple punishment.
Prisoners were kept in solitary confinement, fed regular (but extremely dull) meals, and taken for exercise on the roof of the building. They were cut off altogether from the outside world, and watched over by guards who had a superb view of every part of the prison from a panopticon-style watchtower on an upper floor.
After being left derelict for many years, the place was taken over in the 1990s and turned into a tourist attraction.

We explored ever nook and cranny of the old building, including the windy rooftop, the dingy cells and eerie stairwells and offices.
Ghost hunting equipment, including our cursed Furby and a couple of remote control cars with cameras mounted on them were deployed to relatively little effect.

During one session in what used to be a warden’s office the furby did appear to move soundlessly from the desk to the floor while the lights were briefly switched out. We suspect, however, that this might have been a prank.

After a thorough exploration of the old building, we discovered no ghosts… but did pick up on an extremely eerie atmosphere in some of the darker and grimmer cells. More investigation needed, perhaps!
