The premise of Pint and a Spooky Thing is simple: go for a drink, and then explore one of Edinburgh’s many spooky locales. On the 31st of July, 2025, we undertook one of our most ambitious Pint and a Spooky Things to date.
We met in the function room of the Parkside Bowling Club in the shadow of the magnificent, volcanic Arthur’s Seat. There we learned a little about the Seat’s history, and some of the creepier and stranger encounters people have had there.
After this informative intro, we took a slightly spooky walk in view of the Seat. Why only slightly spooky? Well, it was a bright summer day, and we were strolling in the evening sunshine. Nonetheless, it was an atmospheric wander, which included:
- Spectacular views of an extinct volcano
- A long-forgotten tunnel under the Seat
- A walk past the abandoned hive-like Scottish Widows building
- A jaunt around a loch where a hoard of Bronze Age weapons were discovered
- And, finally, a visit to a 700-year-old public house
We were guided on our way by Spooky Steve, the International Ghost Society’s erstwhile mascot. It was a big trip for him, but he handled it with surprising grace and fortitude.

There were also a few unexpected encounters on the way. We saw a fox, a flock of magpies, a bull… and we stopped to sing happy birthday to someone in the Innocent Railway Tunnel.

We ended up at one of the oldest pubs in Edinburgh, The Sheep Heid Inn… where we enjoyed a few games of skittles in their historic bowling alley – along with a few more drinks, and a final wander around a graveyard while we waited for a taxi back to base.
It may not have been hugely spooky, but it was a thoroughly enjoyable time!
